Course Overview

Practical skills to interpret functional and advanced laboratory panels beyond conventional reference ranges. Build competence in metabolic panels, CBC with differential, advanced lipid markers (ApoB, Lp(a)), thyroid, inflammatory markers, micronutrient assays, organic acids, and microbiome assessment — framed around optimization rather than disease diagnosis.

Learning Outcomes

After completing TWI 202: Functional Labs Interpretation, you will be able to:

  • Distinguish reference range, optimal range, and clinical decision threshold, and identify which framing fits a given panel and patient context.
  • Interpret a comprehensive metabolic panel and complete blood count well enough to identify the common physiologic patterns behind abnormal values and flag results that warrant discussion with the prescribing physician.
  • Explain the limitations of LDL-C alone as a cardiovascular risk marker and articulate the roles of ApoB, LDL-particle number, Lp(a), hs-CRP, and homocysteine in a modern cardiometabolic risk workup.
  • Recognize common patterns on thyroid, adrenal-rhythm, and sex-hormone panels and translate each into a coordination-of-care note.
  • Evaluate the clinical usefulness and limitations of micronutrient panels, organic-acids testing, and stool/microbiome analysis, and separate defensible clinical uses from marketing overreach.
  • Communicate lab findings to patients in language that is accurate, honest about uncertainty, and framed to reinforce the prescriber's role.
